How to Get Rid of Scabies

Option #1: A Doctor's Recommendation

The initial response to scabies would be to get a Doctor's recommendation. I don't oppose to that, because he can get a skin sample from you to determine if it really is. Just as we first did when our family found out we had scabies. If you suspect that you have scabies see a Dermatologist or Allergist a General Practitioner may mis-diagnose it as an allergy.

The Doctor tells you how to get rid of scabies by prescribing you a skin cream, i.e. permethrin or elimite or the like.

You go home with a tube of this cream and put it all over your body, from head to toe. Yes, scalp and all, even face but not too close to your eyes or mouth area. (Scabies will thrive on your head and face too)

Then, leave it on for the rest of the night till morning because it needs to be on your skin for at least 12 hours.

The next day take a shower and hope that the itches have gone, but the results are dreadful. Why? Because you still feel crawling, itching and biting later on that day.

What do I say to permethrin and other Doctor prescribed treatments? Full of crap, it will not go away with just one treatment you will need to do it more than 3 times, especially if you've had scabies for more than a month.

From my experience you're far from getting rid of your scabies with just one treatment. Besides, that is only a part of the remedy, some very important advice the doctor forgot to mention was that you will need to also treat the environment in which you live in.

Also, Permethrin is DANGEROUS! The ingredients in the prescribed medicine has been known to cause cancer and/or other health ailments. I oppose the use of these things on my family's skin, especially my children.

But, that is just my opinion and in no way am I saying that my way is the best. All opinions on this site is for information purposes and should not be used as professional advice in any way.

Option #2: Scabies Home Treatment

It's a living nightmare or hell whatever you'd like to call it. Spending sleepless nights scratching till it bleeds, getting ugly, scabbing skin. Imagine a family of 6 having to deal with this. It got so bad in the house, we had to pitch a tent outside and sleep in it.

What I did after the prescription cream didn't work was purchase a natural home treatment kit. This was how I was going to get rid of the scabies from my home.

We pitched a tent outside since it has very little fabric and the floor is made of plastic where scabies are not likely to be found.

Bagged all our clothing and kept only a weeks worth out, clothing that we would be using, touching and washing on a daily basis. We bagged towels and bedding that we didn't need since we would be washing, daily, the ones we used the night before.

Scabies can be found in your clothing and especially your bedding. It makes no sense to kill the critters on your body, go to sleep at night and have the critters from the bed go back onto your body.

This was important information our Doctor neglected to tell us. He never said they would be in our surrounding environment, neither did he say how long they can survive on your body. My sister-in-law, a nurse, told us how to treat our surroundings.

I mopped the floors with clorox and diluted some clorox in a bottle and sprayed it on our bed and around the home. Clorox, however is not enough. I also purchased some enzyme treatment and sprayed the house and beds again with that an hour later.

I did this regimen on a daily basis for a week. For some people, a week is unnecessary, but for me I wanted to be sure it was gone for sure. I do not think I could have endured another itching fury again.

Scabies can survive for up to 72 hours without a host, the host being humans. So, try your best not to sleep on your bed and stay in your home during this time period, if at all possible.

Sleep on the floor in your parlor, get a futon, put disposable plastic on your beds and wash, wash, wash your bedding.

Scabies Die in Extreme Heat

Scabies will die in extreme heat, so it is important that after you wash your clothes in hot water, along with the enzyme treatment, you should also dry your clothes in a dryer for at least 30 minutes.

Doing this will help to kill the scabies on your laundry.

Below I have a link to some mattress protectors. It is necessary to place a plastic matress protector on your beds so that the scabies will not re-infest your bedding and body.
